Why organic cotton?
Much has been documented on the harmful ways that conventional cotton is grown and harvested. Given the emphasis on the environment today and the consumer growing awarenes of the green movement., the demand for organic cotton.(or anything organic) is on the rise. Although still a small market, the green trend is growing and as the emphasis grows on saving the environment, the demand for it will also continue to grow .
Compared to conventional grown cotton, organic cotton is grown with less pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers causing less damage to the environment. Opposed to its conventional counterpart, organic cotton uses natural materials and fertilizers that allow the soil to replenish itself and maintain its fertility allowing further production of crops. Given that cotton is the most pesticide-dependent crop (using 25% of pesticides) and its fiber in high demand worldwide, the combination of the two puts a heavy strain on the environment. Furtheremore, of all things organic, cotton then has been the subject of emphasis.
Also, with the help of sustainable projects geared towards the expansion and growth
of organic cotton, not only does this expansion help in the demand for the crop but also help farmers and growers change from the chemically- dependent growth systems to a more organic, sustainable practices of farming., thereby improving the conditions of the farmers that grow them.
Well, then what are the true benefits of buying organic? Primarily, the underlying reason is the diminished impact on the environment. If this is something that you are aware about or are becoming aware, then using organic cotton is something to consider. Also, although there is minimal evidence of the health effects of organic cotton over the conventional one, many agree that they would not wear anything that is harshly treated or manufactured with chemicals. For those with sensitive skin and allergies this would be a great benefit to you.
Hence , it cannot be stressed enough that through the sale of organic products, one is promoting and incentivating the growth of a more sustainable and cleaner way of life. By demanding these products, the market will be forced to supply the demand; simple economics with a beneficial outcome.Given that the growth of organic products does not require any pesticides , by and large by implementing less conventional methods and implementing more organic ones you are diminishing the impact of the environment.
